Towers and walls of Solsona
Today you can still see the remains of the old wall of the walled enclosure of Solsona. The first walls date from the 11th century and already included the two cores, that of the villa of Santa María and that of the villa of Solsona. The second walls correspond to the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century.
There are different sections in the Vall Calent area, with some towers, as well as the portals of the Portal, Llobera and the Castell. In addition, on the road to Bassella, just where the Tourist Office is located, is one of the sections where the wall of Solsona is preserved more intact and in better condition, as it measures 40 meters in length by 4 meters in height. Also, very close to this place, there is information about the old portal and the square base tower of Calle de la Regata that are marked on the pavement of the street after the last paving works that were carried out.
The tower of Les Hores is also worth noting, dating from before 1500, the tower had a bell to touch the fire and somatén and another for the clock that still rings the hours today. Today, in a corner of this bell tower, the donkey is “hanged” (made of cardboard) on Carnival Saturday, a custom that recalls the legend that gave the inhabitants of Solsona the reputation of “mata-rucs” (donkey killers).
